Wholesale Market Price Update

October 2013

Since the start of October, the wholesale electricity and gas prices have increased, reversing the previous decreasing trend. In the first week, although the system was oversupplied as a result of above seasonal normal temperatures prices were supported from high levels of storage injections, as storage levels are 5% lower than last year.  This week cooler temperatures and further injections into storage increased prices but were limited by imports through the interconnector.  Electricity has also increased due to the gas prices - the return of a coal power plant and better than expected wind generation compensated for a drop in nuclear generation.
