Wholesale Market Price Update

July 2013

Over the past fortnight wholesale electricity prices have decreased slightly, whilst wholesale gas prices have remained level. The restart of the gas interconnector last week allowed the UK to export gas, pushing up prices briefly. UK gas storage levels are now approaching 60% in preparation for winter, after reaching record lows earlier this year. Announcements that the US economic stimulus programme will continue has boosted Brent Crude Oil prices, which in turn impacted the gas market. Reports have also been received of unrest in several parts of North African countries, with oil fields in Libya being closed by protesters. However, warmer weather forecasts and expectations of higher wind generation over the coming weeks should help to combat some of the potential price increases.
