Wholesale Market Price Update

March 2013

The wholesale market prices of electricity and natural gas have climbed during the recent cold spell, largely thanks to the current storage situation of natural gas which has reached a level low enough to cause some concern to market traders. Storage is currently at 20% of full capacity, with the Rough storage facility being 50% below the level of this time last winter. Although it is accepted that there is more than enough gas remaining in storage to meet demand, and that imports are strong; there could be some reactions if the cold spell lasts beyond the end of next week.
