Dong Energy - a New Entrant into UK Natural Gas Supply

October 2011

Danish firm Dong Energy (Denmark Oil and Natural Gas) have announced that they have signed an agreement to buy Shell Gas Direct from the current owners Royal Dutch Shell, in a deal believed to be in the region of 30m. The purchase, which is due to complete during the second quarter of 2012, would give Dong an anticipated 11% market share of the UK sector. Dong Energy are already very familiar with UK gas supply due to its history of importing gas to the UK through the Langeled pipeline, and is the largest holder of exploration licences in the North Sea. Also, of positive news to the renewable sector, is the intention of Dong Energy to specialise in offshore windfarms which will further bolster their share of an already competitive market - and to give some perspective of the initial expected market share of 11%; British Gas are the largest in the UK and hold a 17.8% share of the market. Our Utility Consultants actively seek to include all reputable suppliers when tendering business energy procurement for clients - approaching a range of suppliers, from the smallest to the largest, and are excited to see what Dong Energy will bring to the fold.
