Different Approach Realises Savings |

One of our clients recently saw the huge financial benefit from our experience in dealing with suppliers and their individual terms and conditions. This particular client was struggling to secure a contract without the need for a large security deposit and unfavourable payment terms. Following keen negotiations on their behalf, we arranged special terms with the preferred supplier, negating the need for a deposit and at much reduced unit rates. Savings will be some £375,000 per annum for three sites.
This just goes to prove that, although not beneficial to every situation, there are often alternative ways of securing contracts; something we do on a near-daily basis. |

Both gas and electricity prices have remained steady over the last fortnight. With reports of an additional 1,200MW of offshore generation pencilled in for the Scottish coast and imminent increases in LNG deliveries and milder weather, supply fears are being allayed despite stored capacity being lower than annual averages.
With the markets as low as they are, it's hard to envisage many more drops so remember to “strike while the iron is hot”. |

We have recently made a very substantial saving of over £40,000 for an historical billing period for one of our clients. We achieved this through disputing intershipper reads with the current and previous suppliers and arranging for the electricity account to be rebilled correctly. Another very good example of what can be achieved through disputing meter reads. |

Savings Made Against The Odds |

As part of our commitment to clients, we recently undertook work for a public house which was being charged incorrectly by suppliers of both natural gas and electricity for an extended period of time.
When we took this supply onto our Utility Bureau Service (UBS), our initial investigations found that the suppliers billing the Company may not have been the suppliers actually SUPPLYING the property. After intense investigations and negotiations, incorrectly paid monies were refunded to the client to the tune of approximately £3,000 and, once the correct supplier of the property was identified, arrangements were made to backdate the costs at contracted rates to 2007.
Suppliers are not legally obliged to carry out or backdate any changes of tenancies which they were not informed about, but in this case our dogged determination led to the account being re-billed at over £11,000 less than the invoiced costs for the 3 year period.
Total savings made by us were therefore £14,000 for the contract, representing 15% of annual costs.
We'll drink to that! |

Energy Markets; Not Just A Domestic Issue |

Although reports have suggested rises in wholesale market prices over the past fortnight the actual increase is minimal; only about 3% between the lowest and highest point of the last 14 days.

The Impact of Freezing Temperatures on Energy Markets |

The current cold spell being experienced across the UK has had little impact on the energy markets, which still remain at a level very favourable to end-users. Although we’ve seen a small rise over the last few days, the overall prices are still holding at prices akin to Summer 2007.

An important feature of our Utility Bureau Service (UBS) includes ongoing monitoring and reviewing of utility consumption trends at clients’ sites. This enables us to identify a number of savings opportunities including potential improvements in energy efficiency.

After a slight upward blip in late October, the wholesale markets for gas and electricity have fallen, whilst oil has risen to a fraction below $80 per barrel and has held steady for the last month.

Identified Savings Lead To More Refunds |

We recently saved a long-standing client of ours more than £7,400 due to an unrealistic increase in the available capacity to their electricity supply. When an invoice was received by Clifford Talbot for verification, we noticed an unnecessary increase in kVA when the site in question had not changed operating behaviour, staff numbers, or output in any way.

As we move into Autumn, we are seeing the traditional upward movement in the gas and electricity markets. These increases can be put down to the price of oil climbing above $75/barrel for the first time since October 2008, partly due to the weakness in the dollar, but also due to the normal annual increase in demand as the colder weather begins to arrive in the northern hemisphere.

We all knew it couldn’t last forever and following the last 6 months of witnessing a steadily falling wholesale market, we’re now seeing a slight ‘correction’ with a small upward blip over the last week. Although overall prices are still well below those of anything before January 2009, we can expect to see a very slow continuation of ups and downs in the market.
