CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme

What is CRC?

The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is a new mandatory emissions trading scheme that will be introduced in April 2010.

Who will it affect?

It will affect all organisations whose electricity consumption through their half hourly metered supplies (including AMR meters) exceeded 6,000 MWh/year (£400,000 to £600,000) in the year ending December 2008, and will include all energy except transport fuels.

How does it work?

  • Each company will have base year (‘Footprint Year) which is April 2010 until March 2011
  • The annual carbon reduction performance will be compared against this.
  • Poor performing companies will have to purchase carbon credits ('Allowances') and credits for first two years of the scheme will have to be purchased in 2011.
